A Close Call with Obama Care

We have always known that Senator Tester strongly supports CARD and Libby asbestos issues, and now Republican Congressman, Senator Daines is also showing to be a strong advocate for us in Libby, Montana. In 2010 Libby residents were granted health benefits through the Affordable Care Act in a unique package just for people affected by asbestos in Libby.

In an unprecedented move in the Affordable Care Act, Senator Baucus expanded Medicare to cover individuals diagnosed with an asbestos related disease resulting from the Libby exposure, provided 4 year screening block grants and created the asbestos related disease pilot program. It looks as of now the ACA will stay due to House Republican leaders and the White House failing to win over conservatives who thought the measure didn't go far enough in repealing the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare.
In 2011, U.S. Senator Max Baucus of Montana congratulated the CARD Clinic in Libby, Montana, on securing a $10 million grant to provide screening for asbestos victims, which was to be paid out over the course of four years. The four year screening grant was renewed in 2015. Yesterday CARD was awarded their 2nd year of funding in the amount of 2.5 million dollars to continue the screening efforts, as of now we know we have funding for screenings to Sept 2018. Dr. Brad Black, CARD Medical Director and Lincoln County Public Health Officer, said, "CARD is grateful for the opportunity to continue providing free asbestos health screening for individuals exposed to asbestos in Libby, Montana. CARD will not only be providing free screenings in Libby Montana but CARD will also implement screenings across the nation for individuals exposed in Libby, Montana." The grant will offer screenings for asbestos-related diseases - such as asbestos related pleural disease, lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma, a rare cancer - to those in the Libby area. Early screening is one of the strongest weapons in the fight to treat asbestos and prevent this terrible tragedy from taking any more of our family members or friends.
